Devblog 8- Treasure Chests, Difficulty Balancing and New Party Member

While this month’s focus has been mainly on debugging and balancing aspects of the battle system, I’ve been breaking things up a little also and putting some focus on writing and designing future parts of the game, as well as adding small functionalities like a slightly different ranged battle accuracy system and treasure chests to be found in the world.

New Party Member

I’ve created the design for a new party member (as of yet unnamed- when I implement that into the game I’ll name him!) that will show up a little later in the game. His playstyle will be more tanky than the party members I’ve introduced so far, but won’t pose as much damage- a good team mate to have if you want to distract enemies as other party member attack from afar!

Treasure Chest System

I almost forgot to add this vital element to the game until I found a little area of the demo I was planning on putting a treasure chest in. Hopefully being able to find chests around the world with unique items will add to the exploration of the game!

Balancing Numbers

Probably one of the most tedious things I’ve done this month was creating an excel sheet for working out the damage numbers enemies and party members do to eachother. I’ll be using this as an aid for when I’m testing out battles to ensure they feel “fair”.

Ranged Accuracy System

While working on balancing battles, something I noticed was that there was no real need for the ranger character, Art, to ever use melee attacks over ranged, as the ranged attacks did as much damage and had the same accuracy at close range as they did from max distance. I’ve changed the ranged accuracy system so that the accuracy reduces the closer you get from max distance for basic ranged attacks.

Debugging and creating music for the game has been a much longer drawn out process than expected so I’m trying to work on things like designing future areas of the game and art, but hopefully by the end of next month I’ll be happy enough with what I have done enough to add music into the game (and maybe finally release the steam page I’ve been working on in secret?).
